What consumers moved toward

The problem

Where trend reporting fails

A trend report names directions and leaves them unmeasured. A category team reading one has a vocabulary for what might be happening and a close-to-zero basis for deciding which of the twelve named shifts is large enough to build against this year.

01

Named and left unsized

A published list gives twelve shifts equal billing and none of them a number. The reader supplies the magnitude from memory, or from whichever entry the author wrote most enthusiastically about.

What shows up
  • Twelve shifts, equal billing
  • Magnitude supplied by the reader
02

One global figure in eleven markets

Trends get published globally and act locally. A shift running strongly in three countries and reversing in two arrives as a single global direction, and a team building for all eleven takes the average as though it described each of them. The countries moving fastest are frequently the ones contributing least to the global figure, because they are the smallest markets today.

What shows up
  • Global average absorbs reversal
  • Fast markets underweighted
03

The forecast outlives the shift

An annual publication describes a market as it stood when the writing closed. By the time a category team uses it, the shift has either accelerated or stalled, and the document leaves the reader guessing which. A direction that peaked eight months ago reads identically to one gaining now.

What shows up
  • Annual cadence, quarterly market
  • Peaked and rising alike
What Sena does for the shift

Shifts counted, then sized

Sena reports which items consumers across 190+ countries chose, which they left, and what they said about the switch. A shift read that way arrives with a magnitude and a country attached before anyone names it.

The definition

What consumer trends measure

A consumer trend is a durable change in what people buy, why they buy it, or how they buy it. Consumer trend intelligence is the work of naming those changes, sizing them, and dating them so a category team can separate a shift worth building against from one worth watching.

Retail consumer trends

The most measurable class, because each leaves a record

Retail consumer trends are the subset visible at the point of sale: format switching, pack-size movement, own-label take-up, channel shift, and price-tier migration. They are the most measurable class of consumer trends, because each one leaves a record in what was left on the shelf. A team reading them from a published list gets the vocabulary. Reading them from captures gets the size in each country.

Early consumer trends

Large enough to detect, small enough to still matter

An early trend is one large enough to detect and small enough that acting on it still carries advantage. The window between those two states is where the commercial value sits, and it is the window a yearly publication is least able to describe. Detection at that stage depends on capture frequency rather than analytical sophistication, since the movement is small and the question is whether it is real.

What a shift should carry.

Four elements, and a trend list leaves out the last

ElementWhat it establishes
The nameWhat is changing, in plain terms.
The directionWhich way the category is moving.
The marketWhich countries it holds in.
Size and paceHow much moved, and how fast.
The averaging problem

The average describes a shape every market departs from

A global trend figure is an average across markets that are moving at different speeds and occasionally in opposite directions. The average describes a shape every one of them departs from. A shift at a fifth of units in three countries, a fortieth in six, and reversing in two averages to a modest positive, which reads as a weak trend everywhere and misdescribes all eleven. Holding countries apart is what makes the figure usable.

Where a trend list ends

It answers what is being discussed and leaves three questions open

01

How large each entry is

Each entry carries equal visual weight, and the underlying shifts differ by an order of magnitude.

02

Where it holds

A trend is a statement about a population, and the populations inside one company’s footprint behave differently enough that the statement needs a country attached.

03

Whether it is still moving

A shift named in a publication was moving when the writing closed, and the useful question is its direction now.

Forecasts crowd the results

A forecast and a count are different instruments

The search results for this term lean toward annual outlooks, agency predictions, and roundups. That says the question being answered publicly is what the coming year holds, rather than what the current cycle already recorded. A forecast and a count are different instruments, and a category team funding a build in the current quarter needs the second.

What the shift read returns

Four outputs, and where each one goes wrong

OutputWhat it settlesWhere it goes wrong
Share movedHow much of the category shiftedStated as a named direction
Country spreadWhere the shift holdsAveraged to one global number
PaceWhether it is gainingFixed at publication date
Stated reasonWhy consumers switchedAssumed from the category

The first two size a shift, and the last two say whether to build now and what to build. A shift gaining across two cycles in six markets is a funding decision. The same shift flat in two markets is a watch item. Separating them is what keeps a build queue from chasing a direction that peaked before the brief was written.

Four reads per shift

What each read shows

ReceiptsWhich item the consumer chose and which they left behind.
Store capturesWhich formats and price tiers reached the shelf.
Geo-verified photosPack, claim, and size, dated and placed by country.

Where the shift hands off

Four decisions along the same line

  • Market signal intelligence carries the reads that precede a named shift
  • Early trend detection marks when one of those reads becomes a trend
  • Trend analysis builds the series a shift is measured along
  • Innovation whitespace intelligence takes a sized shift and finds where supply has yet to meet it
Direct from real consumers

Shared under explicit consent

Real people share what they buy and prefer, under explicit consent. Sena captures it directly at the source, so every figure traces back to where it came from whenever a number comes under question.

How Sena reaches the answer

What the shift read uses

An annual outlook can report what a category looked like when the writing closed. What happened since, it can say only in the following edition, since the stores where the switching happened file zero returns to any publisher.

The evidence base

The shelf, not the outlook

A publication records a category as it stood at press. Every figure behind this page comes from what a consumer chose and left in a real outlet, with the reason on the same record and the week attached.

190+ countries · every shift sized per country
01

Consumer activity

A recorded purchase names the item taken and the item left, which is how a shift gains a share figure.

02

Computer vision

Shelf photography dates the arrival of a format, a claim, or a price tier, country by country.

03

Zero-party data

Signal arrives from the consumer network under explicit consent. The reason a switcher moved comes from the switcher, in their own words.

04

Connect the category plan

Assortment files, category plans, and merchandising systems attach over 250+ integrations.

05

Trace every answer

A named shift opens to the purchases, the markets, and the weeks that produced it.

06

From files to databases

Captures accumulate, so this cycle’s shift can be set against the same shift last cycle.

The mechanism

Purchase to shift in three steps

One method, repeated each cycle across every country in scope, beside the category plan already running. Each shift keeps the records it came from, so a named trend can be opened and checked.

STEP 01

Count

Purchases and captures are collected per country, so every market contributes on the same cycle and each one stands on its own record.

STEP 02

Name

Movements above a threshold are described in plain terms, after the size is established rather than before.

STEP 03

Size

Each shift reports the share of category units it accounts for, per country, so the list arrives ordered.

What changes

Named, then measured

Most consumer trend reporting names directions and leaves magnitude to the reader. Sena supplies the magnitude first.

FAQ

Consumer trend questions

01 What are consumer trends?
Durable changes in what people buy, why they buy it, or how they buy it. A change qualifies as a trend when it holds across enough consumers and enough time to be a property of the market rather than a property of one season. The useful ones carry a size, since a change affecting a fortieth of a category and one affecting a fifth read alike when both are described as a direction.
02 What is consumer trend intelligence?
The work of naming shifts in consumer choice, sizing them, and dating them, so a category team can separate the ones worth building against from the ones worth watching. Conventionally it is assembled from commentary, trade press, and annual outlooks. It can also be counted from what consumers in each market bought and left.
03 What are retail consumer trends?
The subset of consumer trends visible at the point of sale: format switching, pack-size movement, own-label take-up, channel shift, and price-tier migration. They are the most measurable class, since each leaves a record in what was left on the shelf.
04 What are early consumer trends?
Shifts large enough to detect and small enough that acting on them still carries advantage. The window between those two states is short, and it is where the commercial value sits. Detecting a shift at that stage depends on how frequently the market is captured, since the movement is small and the first question is whether it is real.
05 How is a consumer trend measured?
By the share of category units that moved, counted per country, and compared across capture cycles. Share establishes magnitude, and the comparison establishes pace. A shift running at a fifth of units in three markets and gaining across two cycles is a different proposition from the same shift flat at a fortieth, and a named direction alone leaves the two indistinguishable.
06 Why do global trend figures mislead?
Because they average markets moving at different speeds and sometimes in opposite directions, producing a figure that fits the shape of each individual market poorly. A shift strong in three countries, weak in six, and reversing in two averages to a mild positive. A team building against that average builds for all eleven markets and serves three.
07 What does consumer trend intelligence miss on its own?
Whether the company can serve the shift, and at what cost. A sized trend establishes that a market is moving and holds zero information about formulation, unit economics, or manufacturing lead time. Those resolve in development and against the stage gate. A trend list ranked by size is an opportunity set until feasibility scores it.
08 How often should a trend read be refreshed?
On the cycle the category moves in. For most consumer categories that means quarterly, since the interval between captures sets the smallest movement a read can resolve. An annual cadence surfaces a shift around the time it becomes common knowledge, which is the point at which building against it carries the least advantage.
