Who holds the category today

Sena runs market share analysis by counting what buyers in a market purchased across the whole category.

  • 190+ countries
  • 5M+ consumer network
  • 250+ integrations
The problem

Where a share figure misleads

A share figure sets targets, settles arguments and travels into board packs on the strength of one decimal place. Three patterns decide it before anybody examines the arithmetic.

01

The boundary moves the figure

CATEGORY, DRAWN NARROW OWN 26% THE SAME BUYERS, EXACTLY WHERE THEY WERE CATEGORY, WIDENED OWN 14% SHARE FALLS WITH THE DENOMINATOR ALONE

Share is a ratio, and the denominator is a choice. Widen the category and share falls while every buyer stays exactly where they were.

  • Two teams report different shares for one market.
  • The definition is settled after the number is seen.
02

Own volume exact, rest modelled

OWN · TO THE INVOICE EVERYBODY ELSE · MODELLED THE ERROR SITS ENTIRELY IN THE DENOMINATOR OWN · 250+ INTEGRATIONS EVERY PLAYER · COUNTED EXACT SAME ONE INSTRUMENT ACROSS BOTH HALVES

A company knows its own sales to the invoice and estimates what everybody else sold. The precise half and the estimated half divide into one ratio anyway.

  • The error sits entirely in the denominator.
  • A board target rests on somebody else's model.
03

A point moved, cause missing

−1 pt WE LOST BUYERS THEY DISCOUNTED THE SAME DROP, TWO OPPOSITE READINGS THE POINT, SPLIT NUMERATOR · HELD DENOMINATOR · GREW BOUNDARY · SAME FIELD · SAME THE POINT ARRIVED THROUGH THE CATEGORY A VOLUME PROGRAM WOULD HAVE ANSWERED THE WRONG SIDE

The figure reports that share moved, and the reason for the move sits in a separate read. A response is chosen from the size of the drop.

  • Own volume and the category move together, unattributed.
  • The same drop gets two opposite explanations.
What Sena does for share

Share counted from purchase

Sena is the decision AI with access to real-world data. It counts what buyers in a market purchased across every player in the category, so both halves of the ratio arrive measured on one method.

The denominator

Every player counted alike

Sena counts purchases made from each player in the category on a single method, so the denominator carries the same measurement as the numerator.

  • Own volume and player volume counted the same way.
  • The estimated half of the ratio replaced by recorded purchase.
The boundary

One boundary, held constant

Sena fixes the category boundary and the period ahead of the count, then reports both beside the figure.

  • The definition travels attached to the share number.
  • Two periods compare, because the boundary held across them.
The audit

Share opens to buyers

Each point traces to the purchases, the outlets and the dates underneath it.

  • Movement splits into numerator and denominator.
  • A share claim opens inside the meeting.
The method

Reading the share analysis

A share reading rests on two answers: the category boundary fixed ahead of the count and the denominator measured with the same instrument as the numerator.

Market share analysis explained

A positional question, not a sizing one

Market share analysis reports the portion of a category one player holds in a named market over a named period, and it splits any movement in that portion into the parts that caused it.

01
Sizing asks how large the category is

The total everybody in that market spends across the category over a period.

02
Share asks how much of it one player holds

Which means the category has to be bounded before the portion means anything.

Three ways share is measured

Share carries three standard forms, and a plan arguing from one while quoting another reaches the wrong conclusion.

Form 01

Revenue share

Own sales value divided by category sales value over one period.

  • Value against value
Form 02

Unit share

Own units divided by category units, which separates from revenue share wherever price tiers differ.

  • Count against count
Form 03

Relative share

Own share divided by the share the largest player holds, which is the figure most portfolio models take as their input.

  • Position against the field

A premium player holds more revenue share than unit share, and a value player holds the reverse. Reporting one form alone leaves open which of the three a target was set from.

Analyst data and category share

A second reading of the term sits behind part of the results. Analyst firms publish purchasable share figures for named industries, sized to a supplier list and a revenue definition somebody else chose, and a buyer arriving on that reading wants a figure to cite in a document.

Four inputs behind the share

Sena divides the category from four collected inputs, applied per market.

InputWhat it answers
ReceiptsWhat buyers in that market paid across every player in the category over the period named.
Store capturesWhat each player charges and stocks in a real outlet, which is where unit share and revenue share separate.
Geo-verified photosFacing and pack read off the image, so a share movement carries the shelf behind it.
Stated preferenceWhat buyers say would move them between players, which is what turns a point into a cause.

The team’s own numbers form a separate row. Point of sale, revenue data, and account lists connect through 250+ integrations, so own volume enters the ratio exactly, and the rest enters it measured.

What moves a share point

Share is a ratio, so a movement in it has four possible sources, and the response depends on which one carried it.

Source 01

The numerator moved

Own volume changed, up or down, inside a category that held.

Source 02

The denominator moved

The category grew or contracted while own volume held, so the point arrived through the other side of the ratio.

Source 03

The boundary moved

A definition change re-cut the category, and the figure moved with the arithmetic.

Source 04

The field changed

A player entered, exited, or merged, which redistributes the whole denominator.

OWN VOLUME · FLAT THE CATEGORY · GROWING READS AS LOST SHARE
The one most often misread

A flat quarter inside a growing category

The second source is the one most often read as the first. A flat quarter inside a growing category reports as lost share, and a volume program aimed at it treats a category movement as a company problem.

Where the share reading lands: a board reviewing position, a target set for the year ahead, and a share claim meeting a challenge.

  • Every point reported with its boundary and its period.
  • A movement splits into the four sources before a response is chosen.
Direct from real consumers

Shared under explicit consent

Real people share what they buy and prefer, under explicit consent. Sena captures it directly at the source, so every figure traces back to where it came from whenever a number comes under question.

Real people, real consent Zero-party data straight from the source Traceable and verifiable
Sena for market share

Ask Sena the share

Sena works from purchases people consented to share, and reports the position with the purchases that divide it.

01

Players ranked on one method

Sena measures every player in the boundary with the same instrument, so a ranking reports position differences and carries one source underneath all of them.

02

Share split by segment

Sena reports the position inside each segment and outlet type, so a market-level figure resolves into the places it came from.

03

Open a point to purchase

Any share point can be opened on both sides of the ratio, down to the buyers and the day they were counted.

How Sena reaches the answer

What a share rests on

A share is a ratio, and its weaker half is the one sitting outside a company's own systems. Sena builds every figure from real-world signals captured when the question needs it, from buyers purchasing across the whole category down to the dated capture that settles a disputed share point.

01

Consumer activity

Counts what buyers purchased from every player in the boundary, so the denominator is measured and the numerator has something honest to divide into.

02

Computer vision

Reads pack, price, and shelf position off images taken in real outlets, which is where unit share and revenue share come apart.

03

Zero-party data

Signal arrives from the consumer network under explicit consent. What would move a buyer between players comes from the buyer.

04

Connect the systems

Revenue data and account lists join over 250+ integrations, so the numerator is exact before the denominator is measured.

05

Trace every answer

Each point carries the boundary, the period, and the capture forward, so a position reopens on the same terms it was set on.

06

From files to databases

Share workings spread across drives become one base, so this quarter compares against every quarter measured before it.

Who owns it

Who acts on share

Four owners read the same ratio, and each needs a different cut of it before a target is signed.

01

Growth and commercial

The position. Needs share measured on one boundary and held across periods.

02

Category and range

The mix. Needs unit share and revenue share reported apart.

03

Revenue and pricing

The tier call. Needs the position read against the price points buyers meet.

04

Planning and finance

The target. Needs a share figure that survives the meeting it is questioned in.

By industry

Share across every industry

The same ratio, divided on whatever evidence the category leaves behind.

IndustryThe read
CPG and retailCategory spend divided across players, with facings and price tier read from real outlets.
Financial servicesHow the product splits across providers, household by household.
TelecomSubscribers per operator in the market, against the tariff each one sits on.
Consumer techUnits by player and price tier, with revenue share read against unit share.
The mechanism

Consumer to share in three steps

One mechanism, applied per market and per category. Each step is documented, which is what keeps the share figure defensible.

Step 01 Capture

Real contributors share what they buy and pay under explicit consent in the markets named.

Step 02 Bound

Sena fixes the category boundary and the period and states both alongside the reading.

Step 03 Divide

Recorded spend splits across every player inside that boundary, in revenue and in units.

What changes

Counted and attributed

A share figure is only as sound as its denominator, and the denominator is the half a company has the least sight of. Sena measures both halves the same way.

FAQ

Market share questions

01 What is market share analysis?
Market share analysis reports the portion of a category one player holds in a named market over a named period, then splits any movement in that portion into its causes. It needs two measurements: own volume and the volume of everybody else inside the same boundary. Sena counts both from recorded purchase, so the two halves of the ratio carry one method.
02 How do teams calculate market share?
Divide own sales in a market by total category sales in that same market, across one period. The result is revenue share. Dividing units by category units gives unit share instead, and the two separate wherever price tiers differ. The boundary drawn around the category decides the answer, which is why it has to be fixed and stated before the count runs.
03 What is a good market share?
The figure alone settles little, because the answer depends on how many players hold the category and how the boundary was drawn. Position against the largest player says more than the raw percentage does, and the next answer sets out how that is measured. A player at 15% leading a fragmented category sits in a stronger position than one at 25% facing a rival holding 40%.
04 What is relative market share?
Relative market share is own share divided by the share held by the largest player in the category. A figure above 1.0 means market leadership. It is the input most portfolio models take, because it describes position against the field, where a raw percentage describes size alone. Two players on identical raw share hold different relative shares whenever their fields differ.
05 What is the difference between market share and market size?
Market size is the category total: what everybody in that market spends across the category over a period. Market share is the portion of that total one player holds. Size is the denominator and share is the ratio, so a share figure moves whenever the size estimate behind it moves, even with own volume flat.
06 How do teams measure competitor market share?
By counting the purchases buyers made from each player. An industry total divided downward produces an estimate, and a count produces a measurement. Own volume is known exactly from internal systems, and everybody else's has to be measured. Sena reads recorded purchase across every player inside the boundary, so the estimated half of the ratio arrives on the same instrument as the exact half.
07 What causes market share to change?
Four sources. Own volume moved, the category moved while own volume held, the boundary was redrawn, or the field changed through an entry, an exit, or a merger. The second is the one most often read as the first: a flat quarter inside a growing category reports as lost share, and a volume push aimed at it answers a category movement with a company response.
08 Where do teams get market share data?
Two routes exist, and they answer different questions. Analyst firms publish purchasable figures for named industries, sized to a supplier list and a revenue definition somebody else chose, which suits a document needing a citable number. Measuring share from recorded consumer purchase suits a team that needs the position inside a boundary it drew itself, per market and per segment.
09 What data does Sena use for market share analysis?
Purchases recorded across every player in the category, released under explicit consent, from a consumer network of 5M+ in 190+ countries. Prices and facings come from captures made in real outlets, which is where unit share and revenue share separate, and own volume enters the ratio exactly through 250+ integrations.
